Troy

He got to the house at about seven and when Troy came through the door, Ophelia told him that he had to wait a few minutes, because Maxine wasn't quite ready.

“She's not ready? I sent somebody here almost ten hours ago. How in the world is she not ready yet?”

Ophelia responded with something that she’d kept hearing from Vanessa.

“Trust me, daddy. It'll be worth it.”

Troy grinned back at his young daughter. “Is that so?”

She agreed that it was, and Troy had to know what it was that was so different to make her look that way. It was quite clear that Olivia adored Maxine, but it looked like a little bit more adoration than usual.

“Did you have a good day, darling?”

“I did, and Maxine did my makeup while Vanessa was doing hers. Do you like it, daddy?”

“It looks beautiful, baby.”

He wasn't quite sure how he felt about her wearing makeup, but it seemed like it was done as an activity together to bond them closer. He liked the idea of that, if nothing else.

“What about your brother? Is he still sulking in his room?”

Ophelia agreed. “Yes, he still doesn't like Maxine. I told him that he just needs to give her a chance, but you know how he can be sometimes. He’ll come around, dad. You’ll see.”

Troy thought that she was adorable, because that was exactly what he had said about Dylan in the past. His daughter was getting into her parenting stage, and it was cute, considering if it wasn't done for hours on end.

“Well, I should probably go get dressed. Is nanny Farrah here to sit with you guys?”

“She is, and she brought a couple of board games. I think we should have some fun.”

“And what about your brother?”

“He'll come out when it's time to play. It's hard to be moody when we're playing a board game together. It will be like old times; I just know it.”

“You have more faith in all of us, daughter.” Her way of viewing the world was so much simpler than his own way.

“Hurry up, daddy. It's almost time.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Maxine was worried about being late and she kept saying that you were going to be here at seven. You’re early. She’ll be down at seven.”

“I know, baby, but I didn't realize it was going to be such a big deal.”

“You brought Miss Vanessa here; it's a big deal.”

Troy agreed and he couldn't help but feed into the excitement that was coming out of his young daughter. Ophelia was practically gyrating, she was so excited. He asked her what she was so happy about and she couldn't tell him. His little girl just smiled and said that she was happy. That was honestly a good enough answer for Troy. All he ever wanted was for his kids to be happy. They’d all had a hard road after their mother died. If Maxine could put a smile on their faces, that was a small miracle as far as he was concerned.
